This movie is about character and attitude. To my surprise as I reflected on the movie afterward the coach's (Kurt Russell) line "It's your choice" suddenly became pivotable. This story is told to emphasize that single concept.
Scott Murphy is disappointed and discouraged. He is given by vision a chance to relive the times and decisions around the football game during which he received permanent injury. The jury was not only physical but psychological. Prior to the vision he blames the loss of his dreams and opportunities on the call by the coach on "the fateful play". By extension, he blamed Coach Hand.
By means of the vision, he realized he had made the decision and accepted the results as worth the cost.
As I realized the significance of the line "It's your choice" I recalled another pivotal instance in which Christ prayed to His Father in heaven knowing the coming consequences of that decision would be costly. I imagine He also was told, "It's your choice" and accepted the results as worth the cost.
