This has not aged well. The jokes aren't funny and most of the film is just blowing things up.

Making a comedy set in WWII-era Los Angeles was a great idea. Too bad they forgot to make it any good.

Not Spielberg’s best war movie, but his funniest.

Steven Spielberg’s World War II epic 1941 is a piece of junk that’s ridiculously stupid. An all-star cast has been assembled, and includes Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Christopher Lee, John Candy, Slim Pickens, and Ned Beatty, which only adds to the tragedy of the film. The story follows a paranoid California coast that’s awaiting a Japanese invasion in the days following the Pearl Harbor attack in December of 1941. The satire, and the comedy all around, is done in poor taste and has no real poignancy to it. The plot is a jumbled mess at best, and few of the characters are likable. Failing on nearly every level, 1941 is an epically disappointing film that misses the mark by a mile.

I loved this movie when it came out in 1979, but just watched it in 2020 and it's terrible. One more reason to never return to movies you loved - you always get disappointed watching them 20+ years later.

Known as one of Spielberg’s weakest films. 1941 at least has it’s moments due to John Belushi. Spielberg hasn’t made many comedies since though.

I just want to counterbalance all the negativity in the previous three comments and say that 1941 is a great movie. And that is based on the director's extended cut version. The shorter theatrical cut can't do justice to all the characters that are in the movie. Yes and blowing things up is kinda the point of the movie. It wasn't well received in 1979 and people seem surprised that they don't like it today. Here's a little history: 1941 was considered Spielberg's bomb at the time of release. Clearly 1941 was never everyone's cup a tea. But Spielberg's enthusiasm for directing mayhem is infectious and as a viewer I just get carried away. So put me down for #Team1941.

Oh jeez... what a scatterbrained mess. I was not expecting that. Definitely Spielberg's weakest effort. It's just too corny and all over the place. Shame to see such a great cast wasted.

Watched the extended. I think Kubrick's opinion says it best..."The movie is great but it's not funny." I'm not so sure it's great, even. When u think of bits and pieces I like it but watching 2hr26min of this was tough. Was making me drowsy. I'm glad I watched it though, this has always been a desired watch for me. As a kid I would the cover at the video store and think whoa whoa whoa this has John Belushi it's gotta be good but my mom always talked me out of it saying he's barely in it. Sorry to say but she was right to avoid it.

@kurtmoney interesting Kubrick quote because Slim Pickens was in both Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove and 1941. And while Strangelove has a more consistent tone to its comedy, 1941 still has its charms. Love Slim's wobbly reaction when he's about to swing his axe and the tree voluntarily falls itself.
