Jackie Robinson as a superhuman archetype, standing up to fierce racism and intentional beanballs with the same level of quiet resolve and solemn dignity. It's the sort of movie that writes itself, for better and (more commonly) for worse: one dramatic figure stands against the perils of an acidic hive mind and slowly turns the tide. On the very few occasions where we see cracks in Robinson's veneer, the film is intensely interesting. That's the real draw, to me, how a fiery man struggled to tame his very loud emotions in the pursuit of an insurmountably lofty, important ideal. 42 only gives us a brief taste, sadly, choosing instead to invest its time in tired, overplayed vignettes (hey, it turns out southerners were resistant to integration) and a thin, after-school-special grade performance from its cast. Harrison Ford is a lot of fun as the brash, cocksure executive Branch Rickey, who chose to integrate MLB on his own volition, but he's so makeup caked and under-inspected that it's tough to see the role as more than just a particularly eccentric joyride. Mildly effective, with a few dashes of quality spice, it whiffed on the potential to be so much more.

This is more than a movie about baseball, it’s about courage, integrity and a shift in perspective. It can be very hard to watch at times because it is also a movie about hate, ignorance and the rape of a soul. The performances are stellar. Chadwick Boseman is perfect in the role. I tend to give high ratings for movies that inspire. This life is inspirational and the movie succeeds in capturing it in a dramatic 2 hours and 8 minutes. I give this film a 10 (inspirational) out of 10. [Drama]

Despite loving baseball, sport biopics, Chadwick Boseman, I never got around to watching this one. Due to my lovely Movie Club, I was prompted to finally check it out. It is about as solid as expected. Everything about the movie, cast, plot is on par with any quality expectation you may have.

Rating: 3.5/5 - 8/10 - Would Recommend

The only thing I saw prior to watching the movie is Pee Wee walking up to Jackie and talking to him, this was a long time ago too. It did caught my attention and wanted to watch the whole thing. The movie actually didn't suprise me much, it's a great movie and definitely a must watch. I honestly wish they would've gone harder on the racism and
even showed some scenes with one line saying Robinson was Court Marshaled and they didn't actually show it
. Just show it! People already saying the N-word very convincingly, as some actors are struggling with that.

The opening scene with Harrison Ford is absolutely breathe taking and really pulls you into the movie from the start. His performance alone is already great and Chadwick with all the other actors just add to it. Hopefully this movie is true to the real story, as some might be off. I don't usually check that out, as it kind of ruins the movie. America remembering him and even having matches where everyone is using the number 42, absolutely amazing.

No idea if this was anywhere near based on real life events (I'm not American, I don't know baseball) - but it was a great movie, with a great bit of sports and emotion. You can see where Chadwick Boseman got such a great reputation after movies like this.

Definitely recommended

"I think you realize how much you need to have people that you love. It's not as much about them loving you - it's about you needing to love people."

I am beyond shocked. Chadwick Boseman passed away after a 4-year battle with colon cancer. I am kind of flawed right now. Like, wow. The fact that this guy was diagnosed back in 2016, kept his illness private, and yet he still starred in so many movies and gave such powerful performances, while he was sick. It blows my mind. Calling him strong is an understatement.

I remembered watching the 2013 movie '42', where he plays Jackie Robinson, and his performance instantly caught my eye in terms of actors to look out for. One year later, he played James Brown in 'Get on Up', and then shortly afterwards he played T'Challa /Black Panther. Fantastic range for an actor. He slipped into so many roles so effortlessly, back to back, which is rare.

He was a superhero both on and off-screen. The saddest part was he was only getting started.

RIP Chadwick Boseman
