**That 50/50 doesn't feel like a gut-punching film is perhaps the greatest achievement that director Jonathan Levine pulled off with this movie. A comedy about cancer; the combination is refreshing. Despite the large taboo that still rests on this subject, Levine and his group of actors dare to approach this drama with humor, having made a film that contains many comical elements, but does not hesitate to also distrubute emotional punches.**

50/50 is in fact the life story of screenwriter Will Reiser, who was confronted with a rare form of cancer at a young age. In the film he is called Adam Lerner and he has a relationship with a beautiful woman, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard, a nice job where he gets satisfaction from and a best friend anyone would wish for. The shock is therefore great when suddenly cancer is found in him. The film then records how Adam tries to deal with this and is helped by his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) and his very young therapist, Katherine (Anna Kendrick).

Before this director Jonathan Levine made smaller films like the horror All the Boys Love Mandy Lane and dramedy The Wackness, but with 50/50 he makes the first big step to the general public. A step that goes very well for him. Thanks in part to producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (the team behind hits like Superbad and Pineapple Express). The shameful humor of the two adult teenagers also works in surprisingly well in a film with such a heavy subject.

However, the emotional heart of the film lies in Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who might've delivered the best performance in his career so far (dated 2011). In a difficult role, which can easily fly of the handles, he puts his character down nicely first. Who would expect that a young man gets cancer in the power of his life? But that initial astonishment slowly but surely fades away to fear about his future, especially or if he has one. Especially in the scenes with his therapist, even though fantastically played by the lovely Anna Kendrick, that becomes very clear.

There is enough to label 50/50 as extremely succesfull. For a film that makes such a difficult topic open to the general public and succeeds with laughter and flying colors, the bar has to be very high.

Really good movie with drama and comedy. It's a raunchy sad love story pretty much. His best friend cracks me up.
