Watching it one more time, now as a father of a daughter, means much more. "save me".
Watching it as a teen, showed me how many porn types there are. But watching it many years later, it shows me completely different meaning.....
I like Nicolas Cage's acting in these years more than nowadays. He plays well his part except the action face lol. He is very good in drama parts. This move shows drama, thriller, action. I am planning to re-watch "8 mm 2" this week.

This movie is dark. When I found out this was by the same writer that wrote for Se7en, I knew I had to watch it. especially since Joel Schumacher just passed away (RIP). Not near as good as Se7en, but worth it just to see Nicolas Cage freak out and James Gandolfini get pissed.

“You dance with the Devil…” Director Joel Schumacher’s 8MM is a gritty crime drama that goes to some very dark places. Private investigator Tom Welles gets caught up in the seedy world of underground pornography while trying to authenticate a “snuff film.” The cast is quite interesting, and includes Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Peter Stormare, and Catherine Keener. Schumacher does a good job at building the mystery and intrigue as the investigation goes deeper and deeper. However, the story takes a strange turn in the final act that changes the tone of the film. There are a few aspects of 8MM that don’t work, but overall it’s an interesting character drama with a captivating mystery.

Though jumbled, thin, and unreflective of any greater truth, 8MM is a fun and breakneck detective thriller with entertaining performances which elevate the sometimes illogical material. Why it was so harshly beaten by critics at the time, I still do not know.

A very brutal subject is told in a rather brutal way: a hooker is being murdered to film a so called "snuff film" for the insanely rich Mr. Christian. PI Welles' is hired by Mrs. Christan after the dead of her husband to find out if the "snuff film" is real. I would have liked it if Joel Schumacher had made the film less brutal and more thrilling. But its still a good movie and one is bound to think about the abyss of the human nature.

I just watched this movie again, after 20 years. I forgot how well written and fast paced this is. Awesome cast too. At the time this was released, it was a "Nicholas Cage" movie. However, in 2022, you'll find a few faces in here who later became famous. For me, James Gandolfini was the biggest surprise. When I first watched this, James Gandolfini wasn't “James Gandolfini”... yet.

The movie that introduced mainstream audiences to what a snuff film is. It's a tight little thriller with awesome performances from Cage and Phoenix. It's an enduring noir that doesn't really reach the highs of the best in the genre, but it definitely scratches the itch.
