I didn't even know there is an original version of this movie. Regardless, I'm disappointed in HBO Max. This movie and A Hollywood Christmas and maybe many other are simply disappointing. Such poor productions. I'd rather re-watch Six Feet Under which is a great show.

I knew going in that A Christmas Story Christmas sans Darren McGavin couldn't possibly live up to the original. Let's face it. For all the fondness I and many other people have for the original, from an acting standpoint, McGavin gave that movie an enduring charm that couldn't be topped with any subsequent reboots. That said, this was a noble attempt to bring back the magic of the original. Peter Billingsley and the supporting cast did as good of a job as could be expected, and the result was a touching homage to the original and in storyline, to Old Man Parker.

I love this “sequel”. It’s a perfect ending for all the characters and the ending makes me tear up every time.

I haven’t watched any other sequels of the original movie, so I have no basis for comparison there. I have read that this one is significantly better than other sequels.
