I'm not really a fan of much Christmas films, my lest watch in movie genres, but this is something else, something that brings out the Christmas joy, like opening your gifts on a Christmas day, and getting what you wanted or stuffing your face with the turkey like i do.. also the film has a great sense of humour, not like the shit jokes you get out of crackers, but more like sitting around the table with your family and friends having a good laugh. Films with a narrator always come of best for me.... one the best Christmas movies out there...

It’s definitely a nostalgia thing. If you didn’t watch this as a kid you probably don’t have fond memories of it.

Hands down the best Christmas movie ever made. I rarely re-watch a movie but I’ve probably seen this movie thirty times. During a particularly troubled holiday season this movie kept me company all day long. It will always have a special place in my heart. I've read through most of the reviews on this site and many are down on the film. I think people are trying to analyze this movie waaaaaay too much. Think about it - how many good movies are in this space? By definition the genre has to be a little schlocky. There are the films that are considered classics but either nobody really watches (It's a Wonderful Life) or not nearly as funny as people think they are (Christmas Vacation). There are a handful of old movies that are fantastic (Shop Around the Corner, Christmas in Connecticut) but those don't get much mention. This film is a little absurd but that's par for the course.

Feed this to me with a spoon. Gotta think I've seen it every year since the late '80s, when it became a staple for my family on HBO and then gradually developed into a widely recognized TBS tradition. Even though I didn't grow up in 40s/50s suburban Chicagoland, never had to deal with an invading pack of bird-hungry hounds or lusted after a well-branded air rifle, I can identify with every bit of _A Christmas Story_'s sentiment.

There's something universal about this story, from the little annoyances of marching to school in the snow and ice to the wider, sweeping themes of a quirk-accepting family and a turbulent fifth grade pecking order. Nobody's perfect, least of all the primary characters, and in their faults we're able to spot some of our own, to spare a few chuckles at the general absurdity of our mutual condition. Ralphie and his family spend many nights at each other's throats, pecking and sparring over small gripes, but there's a tangible sense of understanding and warmth that bonds them like glue. This story is beloved for a reason.

I am failing to think of a single movie I find to be more heinously overrated than A Christmas Story. I suspect that the central pillar which supports its sacred position within the hearts of modern individuals is merely that of nostalgia. This movie surely does not stand up on its own. Remove all memory of this abomination from the zeitgeist, show it to present day individuals for a renewed “first time,” and I’d bet that this movie would simply implode upon itself.
