Ok so first of all every one of the other five reviews hasn't read the book. Because this movie is almost exactly beat for beat with the book.

This however isn't really a good thing. The book is a LOT of internal monologue. It's great stuff got a decent theme and excellent tension. The movie suffers a lot from things that don't translate well from the book. There are some moments of inspiration like the fake newsbroadcast that honestly should have been leaned into a lot. That could have done a lot to replace the constant moments where she's doing inner voice over. They've made some changes that work such as the
special penny Bob finds that ends up being the first step in his death plan
which in the book is found
from change at a bistro he visits
but in the movie
in a change purpose they keep to sift through
. It's a little less organic but it's a lot more believable that Dacy could seed that.
I'm not sure it was clear in the book that she bought the penny and used it to get bob excited and drunk.
The best scene of the movie unfortunately is towards the end
just after Bob dies and Darcy has to make sure everything is setup before she calls 911
. It's fantastic. The camera work is good, the tension is good, the score works. I'm actually very invested in what's happening. Unfortunately that doesn't describe the rest of the movie before it.

The other major change involves the detective. In the books he doesn't show up until Act 3. In the movie he keeps popping up but never interacts. it's an interesting choice and I thought they were going to do something interesting with it. They don't. Instead his character is completely reworked. Rather than
believing Darcy and understanding why she killed Bob
he instead
assumes Darcy is part of the killing with Bob
. They do this thing where he determines
Beedie is BD for Bob and Darcy. Which honestly caused me to face-palm
. He then goes on to suggest that Darcy will suffer the rest of her life
for killing Bob with a minor not to the book's "you did the right thing"
. It was a mess of a coda.
