While this hits all the major notes of ye ol' prison story, it fails to elicit any emotions beyond "this is sad" and does not allow the viewer to engage on a personal level with the story. There was no insight into the mind of the 3 characters, so the viewer is left looking in from the outside, thinking nothing but "this is sad", and that loses its effect real quick.

A twelve year night.
A movie represents every community and what it takes to survive, without a doubt I enjoyed it and learned so many things.

What I imagine marriage to be like: it begins with a lot of torture porn followed by a lengthy period of ennui, and the whole thing lasts far too long.

This true story of 3 political prisoners (one of whom would eventually become the president of Uruguay) is a difficult watch considering all of the torture scenes, though the director does a marvelous job of bringing the 12 years of solitary confinement and torture to the screen.

While the lives of these men certainly deserve to be made known to the general public, cinematographically there are some issues as there is no real story or narrative arc to engage the viewers and pull them through the pain and the boredom to the end.
