One of the funniest movies of all time. Still to this day, every time I watch it, I can't help but laugh. One of my favorite movies of all time.

**Jim Carrey is the movie.**

Jim Carrey is one of the great comic actors of the 90's, and this film is one of those that opened the doors of stardom for him. He already worked with comedy before, of course, as an actor and stand-up artist, and he took advantage of this background to build Ace, an animal detective with eccentric habits and manners.

In general, this type of comedy is not to my liking, but I have to recognize Carrey's enormous qualities and talent. In cooperation with director Tom Shadyac (I don't know if it was the first, but there were several throughout their career), the actor did a truly inspired job that gives the film all its strength and originality. Imagining this movie without Carrey is impossible. Sure, there's a lot of exaggeration, and the rest of the cast is driven to exaggerate, trying to keep up with the protagonist's bizarreness, but that's a minor problem, in my opinion.

The film also has good cinematography, which makes good use of the scenarios and chosen filming locations. The pace of the film is quite fast and the feeling that remains is that the film could have gone on longer and a lot of things would have been cut on the editor's table. For me, the great weakness of this film turns out to be the script, involving the sudden disappearance of the mascot of a baseball club – a dolphin. The strength of the protagonist actor and the originality of his character end up transforming the whole story into a detail without much force, a mere pretext for Carrey to do all that.

I was a 90s kid and watched the Ace Ventura movies several times back in the day. Watching it like 20 or more years later it's less enjoyable, but it still has its greatly amusing moments. There was probably a lot I didn't actually fully comprehend back then, so certain things couldn't bother me. Now though, for example; I found it really distasteful when in the scenes it was being found out that
a woman used to be a man and it was such a strong cause of being grossed out and vomiting, for not only one character but many.
I understand those who might rate this far lower based on something like that, but I try to look at movies in their entirety and taking into account when they were made does apply. It doesn't make those scenes less
homo/transphobic
, but back then there wasn't education and awareness spread like it is now, and so it's not all that surprising that this type of thing would be used in this type of comedy without much thought. This movie is a good example and reference that things have changed and are changing. I can appreciate it for its time and enjoy the enjoyable parts while looking past the bad ones and just being glad that progress has been made. (Side note: I don't think offensive comedy is going anywhere and it shouldn't have to; it's just not for everyone! Maybe this movie could be viewed as teetering on the edge of offensive comedy at times, but I found it be mostly slapstick. The problematic scenes mentioned just aren't funny though.) Admittedly, if it were the first time I had ever seen it I might have rated it lower because part of my fondness is probably nostalgia related; but I think that's okay!

@bunnyharvestman So being heterosexual nowadays automatically makes you a transphobic, that's really interesting. I mean nowadays a man being misled to kiss another man should be accepted just fine, even enjoyed, right?

@rradonys Actually, no.

I think a heterosexual man being grossed out after discovering that he was previously unknowingly intimate with a biological man/transgender woman is totally legit. I mean, it does seem extreme for them _all_ to be _that_ grossed out, in part, when considering they were obviously attracted enough to Einhorn to be intimate with them in the first place, but you know what; it’s okay to be straight. It’s okay to be “super straight.” It’s okay to have preferences that don’t include those that are trans. We like what we like.

That being said, I still believe the reaction in that scene was excessive as a whole, and because it was, it comes across as transphobic to me. But for those who don’t believe that it does, that’s fine. Hell, I’m confident without asking that my boyfriend doesn’t agree with me on this, but I do remember that we both briefly noted that this particular scene made even him a bit uncomfortable, and he’s just _so_ not the type to be offended by any such thing.

I understand the intended humor and the purpose of it being a part of the larger reveal, but I feel it missed its mark. I feel like it could have benefited from being balanced. Maybe by having varying reactions or by having at least one character who expressed positive interest or enthusiasm when learning of Einhorn being a trans woman. I consider that if I were trans, I would probably really appreciate that. But also, no, I don’t think that type of thing should be done always and everywhere. I just happen to think it would have made this particular scene land a lot better.

Also, there was a woman in the group that was spitting in disgust right along with the men, and that potentially indicates that her character was gay or bi, which means if I was calling the entire group of people transphobic themselves, that I wasn’t only referring to heterosexuals.

You know, it’s interesting to get a response to this now, because I was recently thinking back to this review and wondering if maybe I should explain myself further, since I fall somewhere in the middle of the “left and right” and their respective beliefs. It hasn’t even been 2 years, but I think I would have written the initial review differently now. It probably would have proven difficult to decide how to edit.

So, thank you for the feedback and for prompting me to come back to this.
