I liked this movie a lot more than I thought I would. I feared it would be a typical survival movie, one of those that tend to be long, drawn out and boring. Instead I was pleasantly surprised. The movie flows really well.

Alternating between the two timelines, before and after the storm hit, is a great idea. Moving from drama to romance keeps the movie from becoming too heavy for too long. At the same times, it gives the audience the chance to get to know the protagonists in a natural way, avoiding cheesy and awkward lines.

The two main actors were really great. I'd never seen a movie with Shailene Woodley before, but I have to say that she definitely has a lot of talent. Great performance, she really carried the whole film. Sam Claflin was also good. Even though he had less screentime than Shailene, he managed to perform a charismatic and believable character. The two of them had a nice chemistry, I hope to see them again in another movie.

The cinematography was superb. I don't know if they used CGI or some practical effect, but it looked amazing. Also, a lot of interesting shots that captured the vastness of the ocean and its charm.

In the end, it's a nice movie about human resilience, with nice storytelling and visuals. The story is nothing new but it is based on a true story and that makes it hit more. A nice mix of romance and drama.
I loved the "little" details at the start. The movie tells you right there that Richard is gone, but as you get entangled in the story, you forget that. You only realize slightly before Tami does. Gut-wrenching but brilliant. That's good storytelling to me
