The small moments within this quiet gem are insightful, tender, and real. They are, perhaps, greater than the film as a whole, but this coming of age drama shouldn’t be overlooked.

It seems as though we are currently inundated with coming-of-age dramas.  They all seem to have the same general themes - struggle with parents, balancing the desires of a younger guy/girl while being drawn to an older guy/girl, etc.  I don't think that its too hard to make a decent film in this area but I do think that it is tough to make a really good film.  I can think of a few good ones -  An Education and The Way, Way Back come to mind.

I think where this film succeeds is that it traverses that gracefully traverses the various themes without getting bogged down in them.  The other day I watched Breath - I enjoyed it very much but I felt this was a better film in that the focus did not stay on the main character.  In that sense the movie stays true to the title - they keep the moments small and simple to build a bigger story.  Definitely one of the better films this year.  And Molly Ringwald is in it!
