A feminist reading of the horror genre. Reality is reversed in this story of possessions. Inner demons. The transformed male figure. Along the way, the director forgets the viewers. It is not enough to build a disturbing atmosphere.

the fact that this is romola garai's debut foray into writing and directing shows in the occasional misstep with filming choices and the way the chronological mixups don't feel well placed at all times, but overall it's a very strong movie. not a lot of full blown horror, save for a couple jump scares and a gory climax, but unsettling and uncomfortable from beginning to end.

It went one way, then did a few twists and then got just really weird the past 20 minutes or so. Now I’m just like “what the actual fuck”

To be honest, I lost interest in this movie half way through and stopped paying attention to it. It was sometimes too weird for its own good, and the confused narrative papered over the film's message.

The beginning is unnecessarily hard to follow with non chronological sequences, but it settles after a while once we're into the main story + main flashback. It then turns into pretty classic horror setup: there's something nasty going on with the water and walls in the house and there's a "sick mother" locked in the attic. Surprise (not): she's possessed and the girl taking care of her is a kind of guardian.

Even if it seems quite classic, it's well done, the atmosphere is good, the interaction between the main characters too. It takes a little long to finally get the relevance of the flashbacks and even more for the link to the title amulet that is randomly found in the beginning.

Final twist is nice, it also immediately makes sense, so the the added flashbacks as Tomaz realizes what happened are useless and a little annoying. The feminist vengeance message is not particularly subtle but it works, in a very harsh_there can be no forgiveness_ way.

Despite the few clearly visible beginner mistakes it's worth the watch, maybe not the rewatch though.

I loved this. I enjoy slow burns and movies that embrace 'weird,' and this does both superbly. I thought the feminist themes were handled really well, and not shoved down your throat. There are some awesome effects and lots of little things to notice and pick apart as you go. Overall, definitely recommend giving it a watch!

I'm a bit torn on this one. On one hand I like the climax of the film and how it actually feels like a logical payoff, but on the other hand this film is glacially slow with some character interactions/developments that feel sort of odd. Moody horror fans should eat this up, despite the shortcomings. Others might not have the patience needed to get to the payoff.

Another super slow film that I surprisingly enjoy. It got me hooked from the start. The acting was amazing. It's giving me feminism vibe but not too on the face. The second half was wild, bizzare and unexpected. It's a slow burn with a great payoff. Nice amount of gore and the devil is BATshit crazy!
