Anne of Green Gables

The filmmakers take a lot of liberties with the source material, but on the whole it was quite an enjoyable and relaxing watch. Some protagonists are merged into one, e.g. Rachel Linde is totally eliminated and replaced by Diana's mother, which is a mistake as their characters were quite different, and many events and people not present in the original novel are added. I really liked Matthew and his sense of humour though. He seemed a much more developed character than the Matthew from the book. I have recently re-read AoGG and I was a bit surprised how little there was about Matthew. The film seems to incorporate some events from later Anne novels and the whole plot with Anne and Gilbert's forbidden love is totally against what happens in the novels, but hilarious nevertheless. Also, the filmmakers decided to keep Matthew alive which makes it much more optimistic in comparison to the book version. On the whole, the film seems a bit of a curiosity but as you can really unwind watching it, it is definitely a good way to spend your free time.
