Powerful filmmaking

Apostasy is the low-budget feature debut of writer/director Daniel Kokotajlo and, as the name implies, it tells the story of a breakdown in the relationship between a member of the faithful and the organised religion to which they adhere, which, in this case, is the Christian denomination movement known as Jehovah's Witnesses. However, whilst the film tells the story of one person abandoning their religion, it also tells the parallel story of two people who refuse to do so, committing themselves more and more to its practices, even as they come to question some of its dogma.

The film doesn't do the JW's any favours and nor should it. There are elements of the church that are harsh and unkind, and not representative of God's love. This is a powerful yet preachy film, an encouragement if any were needed, for people to look for a church and faith more reflective of the Bible's teachings.

@lee-brown-barrow
a) Their religion is one of the most reflective of the Bible, far more-so than almost all of the more popular forms of Christianity.
b) Your religion is no better than theirs.
c) All religions rely on brain-washing from a young age and/or taking advantage of vulnerable people, and they all only exist to make money for the people creating the propaganda to try to control everyone.

Objectively speaking, religion is one of the worst things to ever happen to the world. And the fact that 75% of the world's population is still religious is a damning indictment of how bad the brain-washing is.

@stevemanics I wouldn't even call it a religion ...its a cult in the vain of Scientology amongst others.

@1treehillbilly Every religion is a cult. Some are just stricter and/or more extreme than others.

@stevemanics Amen to that :) The most harm is always done by the so called good people. Wars start from the expression "my way or the highway"

British drama focused on a family of Jehovah's Witnesses. Powerful, emotional film with a stirring performance from Sacha Parkinson. The viewer has to take director Daniel Kokotajlo's account of the religion as an accurate take, and it doesn't really paint it in a positive light, but it packs a punch.

Interesting but i feel it could have dug just a little deeper and only skimmed the surface. Like the other cult Scientology amongst others the banishment of loved ones and constant brainwashing is detrimental and complete opposite of love when surely god should be all encompassing.

Paradise.. well if people think they are really going to Paradise then i think why wait around here...off you go. We should be making this life paradise because this life is certain the after life is not.

Good all round performances...Ivanna was certainly a happy Jehovah and found lots of comfort at the Kingdom Hall (sarcasm)
