Villeneuve's first full length feature film. It's smaller in scale and more personal, a rom-com with quite a bit of drama. It's an awkward situation, but an interesting situation. I was never bored but the pacing is very slow. I like the more adventurous situations our two characters get into, the desert part is something i'll remember. Great acting and chemistry between the two leads. Beautifully shot. It's all about the meaning of life, looking for your best life and not waiting forever before doing what you want to do or say because you never know what might happen. But it's also sad because trying to do all that sometimes requires asking your partner for more than they can give.

Reminds me of a cursive exercise book: There's a lot of work on technique but the end result is just a random jumble.

_August 32nd_ is a very competent first film. Sure, every director needs to start somewhere, and this is not a bad film by any means , it just feels like he hasn't found his style here so instead tries to copy Xavier Dolan (who was only 9 years old at the time).

Don't forget, though, that 2 years after this he would release _Incendies_, so he had it in him all along.
