It was so heartbreaking to watch Lindsey open up, being vulnerable, talking about her insecurities and how using jewellery helps her... only for her boyfriend Dave's response to be to completely ignore that and focus on the weather report on the TV. It's obvious he's not being dismissive to intentionally hurt her feelings, but it's so sad that he doesn't see that his actions could have caused that. I'm not saying it's anyone's fault, but it's sad when you see people with autism in relationships and don't seem to be able to provide emotional support to their partners meaningfully. You get the distinct feeling that he's never quite on the same page as her, can't actually understand how she feels, what her needs are, let alone help her with it.

I will say it must be absolutely terrifying navigating the world as an autistic person, watching Lenny talk about himself and his struggles to find his place in the world. Because there is so little understanding of how the world works around them, it seems like for people like Lenny, they become a product of everything that they hear and it's so clear that it's warped what he thinks he should want for himself, and because he doesn't have it, it makes him feel so miserable. People with autism, without the right support, must feel so alone in the world, I wish there were more organisations set up to help them integrate better into the neurotypical-normative society that we live in. It would be like sending a child out into the world of adulthood without any schooling, they would be so lost.

So many times when these documentaries ask people with autism, what is love, their answers so often feel like responses you would hear from a child. Like someone describing a concept that they don't fully understand. I sincerely hope that it's not because they don't feel it the same way, but because they struggle to articulate it the same way. That being said, Lindsey is very articulate about how she feels and very sensitive and considerate about Dave's feelings at any given moment. Perhaps autism in females manifest differently than in men, or that she is more high-functioning. I truly hope that she's able to find emotional security with Dave, because it feels like that's not Dave's strong suit, and everyone deserves to feel loved.
