This was just the Halloween trick - or - treat I needed. 80s Black music & CULTure with a great cast, comedy and campy horror. And a breakout lead actress so new she doesn't even have a profile pic in the 'actors' list. I recommend!

[Stockholm FF] Close to the early David Cronenberg films, this proposes a reflection on the need to transform to fit in with society. A rejection of your own identity to be what others want you to be. The idea is interesting, but the development is mediocre. The director builds a film with the worst clichés of independent cinema, and doesn't manage the possibilities offered by a script, otherwise, not too inspired.

This was filmed to have an old look and resemble the blaxploitation films of the 70s-early 80s. I kept expecting Pam Grier to show up at any moment. The movie drug a bit but did manage to squeeze in a few laughs here and there. I really loved the folklore aspect of it and, of course, all the cameos. So many people I recognized kept popping up in these little random roles. Overall it's not the best movie you'll ever see but it is a fun little afternoon watch.

You have never had a bad hair day like this one! It’s a pretty good movie overall but its messages are sometimes lost beneath the crazy hair-stryonics!

Hidden gem! Folk horror satire set in the 80s focusing on a young woman trying to succeed in television, she gets a new haircut but it looks like it has a mind of it's own. It has some cultural vibes and a strong message about body image, diversity, being too agreeable, beauty comes with a cost and change isn't always good. Loved the folklore they brought in, I wanted to know so much more about the moss girl and would like a copy of the Slave Lore book. The hair effects were pretty solid and nice to look at, the kills were great and unexpected, dig the grainy picture and 16mm, loved the music choices and I didn't feel the runtime that much. Nothing scary just a really fun watch with a wild third act. Where the hell was Laverne Cox (the hair dresser) for the second half of the movie, I wanted more!

This is sort of a dark comedy. The comedy is dry tho. This is a message film and the changes in tone mesh but the comedy aspects don't really work because I found myself laughing at parts that were supposed to be "scary".
I think the most well done part is the parodying of 90s hip hop and R&B culture. The parts with music videos and Usher were fantastic and the best parts.
It has a similar concept to a 90s version of the Amazon show Them. Different stories but the same underlying story. Them is done much better tho.
