A misanthropic man sets out to exact revenge on his estranged father, by finding a loophole and attempting to win the National Spelling Bee as an adult. Figuring it would destroy his father, and everything he's worked so hard for as head of the Spelling Bee Championship Organization, Guy Trilby eventually discovers winning isn't necessary for revenge, and that friendship is a blessing not a curse.

Imagine if Bad Santa and Best in Show conceived a child, but the mother smoke and drank throughout the pregnancy. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Bad Words. Bateman does his best Billy Bob imitation, but there is a problem: his character is bad but completely uninteresting. Jason Bateman directs and acts in the film with the assurance of someone who has been in the ‘business’ since he was ten. Particularly in the comedy genre he is sure-footed and knows his way around.
