Right. So a pining mother goes a bit mad and pretends a dumpling is her son. She then eats the dumpling because it’s going to leave her.
That’s a weird AF metaphor which, in all honesty, I’m not even sure I understand. Who eats their own son!?
And then the real son comes back anyway...
So basically, she was sad and had dinner and he came home.

You didn't get it because you must not have had a doting controlling mother. For most Chinese, a son is a mother's pride and joy. They often believe they know better what will make their sons happy. The Bao is a bread dumpling filled with anything from meat to sweet dessert filling. Something most love like donuts. The metaphor is a nice reminder to let your kids grow up.
