This is kind of one of those films that is difficult to rate since it's kinda garbage but it's also enjoyable garbage. The pace of the film means that its laughable qualities are difficult to dwell on - it's easier to get lost in the fact it's a campy nonsense romp. It helps that it also has quite a few genuinely (and unintentionally) funny moments.

Obviously, with it being made in 1980, the special effects are quite dated but are generally serviceable, in my opinion. The weakest parts are the visually repetitive space battles, if you can call them that. The plot is very simple but the visual gloss of the costumes and makeup help distract from that.

I feel my score of 6/"fair" doesn't quite do it justice, since I did actually enjoy it a fair bit, but objectively even a 6/10 is probably a little generous!

I want to like this movie. I like 80s scifi trash. But this movie was boring. The costumes and the set was great. But the story was boring.

This was perfect fine. This obvious rip on the success of Star Wars was not offensive, lower budget of course and it shows. Overall it was fine. Not life changing, but I understand why it’s a cult classic.

Enjoyable trash I suppose. It is very slow paced for sure.

How about this find any Star Wars movie and complain about it. Then when you are done watch this. It's a great space film that shows what Star Wars would be with a low budget. But let's take a moment and realize this has more bounty hunters than Star Wars.
Gratuitous beeping and buttons
Gratuitous luke skywalker replacement parts before empire
Gratuitous talking space ship
Gratuitous space sexual themes
Gratuitous space ship tracking shots
Disintegration Fu
Neck Choke Fu
Space Belt Drink Dispenser Fu
Come on it has a space cowboy!
"you know about computers. you can help us"
"is that real smoke you are putting into your lungs"
"i think its your torque bar. it slipped its grove" while making out"

Everyone in their comments seems to have missed the origins of this movie. This is the Space Version of the Magnificent Seven, which of course is the recreation of the Japanese classic Seven Samurai.

Robert Vaughn gets the award for playing a role in two movies that recreate the Japanese Classic film playing the exact same character in both. Roger Corman's production brought many big names to this rendition including George Peppard, Richard Thomas, Robert Vaughn, John Saxon, Jeff Corey and Sybil Danning. Almost every space ship somehow was a recreation of some sort of animal: Moose, Hammerhead Shark, Frog, Large-Mouth Bass, Dragonfly, Flea, Tick, Manta and Octopus. Only the Nestor's ship resembles a traditional sci-fi UFO or space ship. The Valkyrie plays the part of Chico (Horst Buchholz). If you have about 5 hours to kill, watch The Magnificent Seven and this movie back-to-back and you'll easily see the comparisons.
