Begotten is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that most people will never see, and of those few who will, most will hate it, and I understand why; this movie is not for everyone, hell, I never hear anyone talk about it - the people I've sat down to watch it must have thought I was crazy.
The movie is commonly compared to Eraserhead, only more extreme; and that's fair, because, really, what else can one relate this to? Only recently do we have mother! - which is similar in theme, but the likeness ends there.
So, what is Begotten? It's a silent movie - no dialog, no music, minimal ambient sound (e.g., wind) - and it's filmed in harsh, high-contrast black and white; like "what the hell am I looking at" level. Is it a gore movie? An art film? I honestly don't know. Who is it for? Almost no one. You'd have to love nightmarish black-and-white horror, and also have the patience to let the vague images work their magic. I think people who are fans of industrial, particularly Skinny Puppy would love this.
Lastly, this is a film you need to be in a mood to watch, there is nothing fun about it. This is a journey best taken in the dark, alone.

Making use of low quality film to give the images a pretentious artistic look (and hide the low budget make-up and practical effects) doesn't work if there is no good plot to hold them together. It's a hard to watch film, because of the low quality, not because of the imagery. Boring through and through.
