Chance is a simple gardener working on the house of an old man. When the old man dies Chance has to go to the street. He has no place to go, he has no family and he doesn't know anything about the world. He never left the house, he has a soft mental disability, he loves watching tv and everthing he knows about the world he learned through television. Meanwhile he got involved into the middle of the political circle of the United States.

Peter Sellers plays Chance in such a brilliant way! Perfect body language and perfect facial expressions, he did just a perfect wonderful work in every way possible. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor with his great performance and actually won a Golden Globe Award for it.
The scenes with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine together are beautiful to see. Melvyn Douglas did a great job too.

Overall, Being There is a touching film with a strong hidden message within. It will touch your heart and provide you good laughs sometimes.
This is the kind of film that you'll keep thinking after watching it because you might have some different possibilities of interpretation for it.

A fantastic and very unique film. Peters Sellers really is amazing and I plan on seeing more of his films.  Much better than his more celebrated The Party.

A very pleasing film. In the whole film, I had stress and excited that others did not notice that he is a illiterate and ignorant person. Peter has played his last role with a full professor. And I am very happy to see this movie now and in middle age because I could understand it less than if I saw it.

I can understand the love for Peter Sellers here–he really sells the hell out of this, and my reaction to his performance evolved throughout the movie: from “huh, funny” to “what is happening” to “ok, let’s move on and do something” to “oh, maybe this is actually amazing.” In other words, it’s a one-joke movie but the artistry is in the repetition, perhaps? That said, Ashby is still hanging an entire movie on this performance and 40 years has dulled the satire a bit, so as a whole it didn’t quite come together.

Good film.

Steadily paced, assured direction and nice understated performances from ten cast. Sellers’s robotic performance is particularly impressive.

Nothing special visually. The camera is subservient to the story. But that suits it.

Confident and consummate filmmaking all round.

7/10
