It is hard to believe a movie as big as this was made almost 60 years ago. The sheer scope of the movie is impressive and being the most expensive movie made at the time is easily seen. It still holds up pretty well today. It is extremely long but moves well for the most part. Charlton Heston gives a really great performance. The chariot race was fantastic and still rivals action scenes today. This is definitely one everyone should see at least once in your life.

This is an epic remake, something else that Hollywood has trouble doing -- to remake a film on this scale that finds new audiences year after year, after year. Brilliant, wonderful, every bit of it. A must, must see. Just plain excellent!

The way Ben-Hur holds up after 60+ years is really incredible. After watching Gone With the Wind yesterday, I was expecting another 3,5 hour drag, but I was pleasantly surprised…

The time actually flies by! Everything is top notch, but I was most impressed by the scale of this epic tale. The religious aspects bother me, as with most religious things, but this is still an amazing adventure.

I'm generally not a big fan of religious epic films. I don't have the patience for drawn-out, heavy dialog or scenes that seem to go on forever. Nevertheless, I am of course aware of the historical significance of films like "Ben-Hur." And the famous chariot race in particular lives up to its reputation, even if the movie should have been over afterward. I was also caught off guard by the rather obvious homoerotic subtext, while the use of blackface for some characters was less surprising due to the era. All in all, "Ben-Hur" is certainly a good movie, but I will probably never see it again.

By far the best film adaptation of the novel. And I'd be very surprised if there's ever another film that tops the 1959 version.

Like how someone commented here before: This movie holds up super well and there's amazing acting from both Charlton and Stephen. I do feel like it gets a little cheesy by the end with the Passion scenes but the rest of the Biblical scenes were done well. I can totally see why this movie has captivated such an audience!

I know this comes off as pure trollery, but as I was watching the chariot race, I couldn't help admiring what amazing creatures these horses were. Then I thought of the rumors about a stunt man dying, so I looked it up.

Apparently, the stuntman dying is an urban legend, but the stuntmen on set said that the second unit director was so far behind that he killed upwards of 100 horses to get the scene done.

This ruined the movie for me. I know, bleedin' heart and all that, but it was a splash of cold water to go from, "these animals are amazing in this" to "Breezy churned through them like someone with a cold churns through tissue."

Just my own experience.

I guess I never even saw Ben-Hur straight through. I actually had no idea Jesus was in it. Charton Heston is once again type cast as a soldier who becomes a slave.
After the Ten Commandments. This is the film that got him an Oscar though. Both are strong classics to watch around Easter time. With fine effects for their time.

Ben Hur is one of the epics, very much like The 10 Commandments and Cleopatra, that you should at least have seen once. It is a milestone in the history of cinema.

I absolutely understand why this is one of the biggest films in history. I totally see people being blown away by how big and epic and exciting this was for 1959. For the most part, I agree too. Some of the scenes are really crazy that they were made to look that good at the time. The scope is just huge.

But I can't help but view it under modern comparison either. I love a good long epic, but this still feels incredibly long. As important as the last hour is in terms of theme, I'd have been happy to see it end after the horse race. Certainly watch this at some point if you've never seen it though. This is important to film history.

Don't worry, there is an intermission.

We watch this for the chariot race and the chariot race only.
Everything else is contrived religious rubbish.
