Bhoothakaalam seems quite simplistic at starts but it's all a ruse as the story grows with multiple simple but well crafted characters. They all have barely enough back story and yet they are so full of life, leads and side characters alike. The articulated despair of the lead character is brilliant, the Kafkaesque desperation to at least have your family by your side when everything else turns into terrifying absurdity. The claustrophobic scenery of the house is well balanced with airy shots of the city. I can't help but associate to Kiyoshi Kurosawa with the quiet creeping existential horror and the sheer necessity to deal with it as best to abilities. Certainty it falls into a few unnecessary clichés of the genre and a few unnecessary jump scares and at times I wish it would rather go explore into the Indian than lean on Western tradition when it becomes a bit too easy. Not to be entertained by exotism, but because by this amazing display by Rahul Sadasivan, I think he could really pull it off. Mr Sadasivan, if you read this; please don't be afraid to take the next step. I for one look so much forward to it. This movie is for me a clear eight but with a bit more personally I smell the potential for a future ten.
