To those who are confused: The film is about writer's block. There are two parts, both her attempts in the movie she is writing in her book.

The first story she wrote ends when she sees a bear and gets into an accident. The second part is also her story, which is a variation of her first story but it's more intricate. Once her character stumbles in on husband having an affair, she sees a bear which symbolises the end of second story like before.

The bear is her metaphor for writer's block. Hence the title "The Black Bear".

Aubrey Plaza is terrific in this!

'Black Bear' is intriguing from beginning to end. I did find the first half to be the stronger and most interesting part, though the conclusion is still fairly captivating all the same. As noted, Plaza is excellent throughout - she carries the film, no doubt. Christopher Abbott has a few moments, while it's neat to see 'The Walking Dead' newcomer Paola Lázaro involved.

Agree with others that there was probably a good movie in here that just didn't quite manage to make its way out. Great performances from all, but unfortunately they couldn't overcome the script which never fully managed to connect for me.

Certainly different and not what I was expecting. Is it any good? It kind of is but perhaps a little too clever for its own good.

Aubrey Plaza gave one of the best performances of 2020 in this movie, but the script is way too pretentious and ambiguous, too bad

similar to ozon's swimming pool which is a way better movie but i like this one too. i think the director also loves "who's afraid of virginia woolf" but the writing is not at that level. kinda wanted another chapter for the flood but loved aubrey's performance. also you can't trust anything and nothing is real.

Another classic example of the parts being better than whole. I wanted to love this movie but I just couldn't get there. Sure, the acting is fantastic and Aubrey Plaza is a revelation (I have been a fan going back to Safety Not Guaranteed). The first half was very good and during the first few minutes of the second part of the movie it looked like it was on an even better trajectory. But the it just started to meander. I loved the idea of the two different story lines going on at the same time but it seemed as if the director didn't know how to bring it home. There was a better movie in there, I think.

It's not because your lead actress is amazing that your film is, too.

Aubrey Plaza owns her role like a used tattoo and turns in what will probably be my favorite performance by an actress in 2020, but all of that is sucked into the void that is this film.

Watching a director who's married to an actress make a movie about a director's dysfunctional relationship with an actress doesn't feel like watching a movie to me. It feels like I'm watching a stranger's therapy and that's a lot less interesting than I would've thought.

Amazing Aubrey Plaza performance. Overall did not come together for me. I was really intrigued during the first half and that arc was left unresolved. Probably the best part was seeing indie-filmmaking in action. I was not emotionally invested in any of the character's outcomes in part 2.
