4 successful women and 1 is a Federal judge...so far so good. Until you realise one cooks (she has a restaurant), one cleans (she owns a hotel) and the other is a housewife (literally). The plot of the film is for these 4 strong, successful women to read _50 Shades of Grey_ and understand their lives aren't complete until they have a man.

Watching _Book Club_ you will be struck by how many white people are on this planet and how few people of colour there are in this film. The only non-white characters in this movie are the help. Yes, seriously.

_Book Club_, literally, is an example of everything I hate in movies. Facile characters, stereotypical plots, predictable story lines, mediocre acting, telegraphed jokes, insulting to women and secretly racist... I know my mum is more a member of the target audience than I, but this film just makes me feel sorry for her and the film's public at large.

@rmodegard Hi there. I can tell you that racism is always going to make me uptight. Sure, some directors choose not to include people of colour (Woody Allen famously comes to mind), and while I disagree with that choice, I wouldn't call it racist. But when you cast POC only to play servants?

Also, when I criticise this film, it isn't just about race, it's also about "Facile characters, stereotypical plots, predictable story lines, mediocre acting, telegraphed jokes, insulting to women".

Finally, I wouldn't have seen it had I known, but unfortunately they didn't write "sexist and racist" on the poster.

@rmodegard its 2018. everything is about race one way of the other....e movie had back people, people would say that would be reverse racism, like they were put there for props. if a movie cast is 100% its called a blissful revolution. but then.... where would be the racism there?

@saint-pauly Im gonna tell you a little secret that i know you know deep down. don´t get so uptight with racism, you will feel way better. because you know what? it´s part of the "human condition". it´s one of those things that, one way or the other, will always exist. but if you wonna get mad or sad about it, dont let it be because of a movie...( also, everything you just mentions can be "seen" in the cover, so why watch it? )

It's good these women are still working, but it's sad this is what they're working on. Terrible cliched schlock, and maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I feel I missed several important plot points. The fact Don Johnson was her old flame, the fact Ed Begley Jr was her ex husband, why Diane Keaton had her own house, but lived with her children, and why Diane Keaton always plays Diane Keaton?

You want to talk about cast stuffing. Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen in the lead roles with Andy Garcia, Craig T. Nelson, Don Johnson and Richard Dreyfuss as the men that love them...and more including some cameos so clueless and inconceivable you won't even believe it. But this is not a rom-com. It's like four of them, all with some weak sauce, and shoved together hoping you like one of the four. But since the writers can't commit to an idea, you don't commit either. This movie must have been shelved a while since the plot device of reading "Shades of Grey" already seems hopelessly out of date. Frankly, they might have been waiting for one of the leads to die and capitalize on that.

I'm certainly not the demographic they were shooting for here, but the audience I was with was. They seemed to enjoy it a bit, but not nearly as much as audiences seemed to like the male version of this, **Last Vegas**. There are laughs here, but you have to really show _patience_ because it takes forever to get there. This is clearly another nail in the coffin of rom-coms. 4/10

Mäh. Great to have older actors still getting roles. But the story was boring and nothing was exciting at all. Predictable as hell and that's it. Nothing more to say.

I just finished this movie, and yes it's a light-hearted rom-com, but man is it drenched in clichés. I didn't have hight expectations, and they were barely met. The list of actresses and actors is super impressive, but this was too predictable.

Slickly geared towards its target audience, but this is sadly less than the sum of its parts. And by parts, I am referring to the talented cast of actors who aren't given much to work with here, other than bland, predictable material. It's not awful, but I was glad when the final chapter of the film ended.

I'm defo not one who goes to these movies without force, but this one wasn't so bad as i thought it would be. There was a good amount of humor in it and the storyline though completely predictable was acceptable. If you have read the books it might be funnier cause you know what they talk about sometimes but its ok if you didn't cause the books were kinda lame..but then again my inner goddess isn't shocked that easily.

A really satisfying film, I didn't expect to laugh so much .. I find it a light and fun movie to watch, but it contains an important meaning, that no matter age or love nothing will always find its way even in the most tortuous ones.
