A French politician roams through bizarre joints in Tahiti while realizing he has no power over anything, filling the existential void with haughty monologues and paranoia about possible nuclear experiments going on.

In the three hours of the film, nothing at all happens: the audience is just asked to bask in the island’s hazy atmosphere and absorb the ambiguity and lack of understanding of the characters. Everything plays out in a loose and minimal, yet uncannily artificial manner. Rather than relying on a traditional plot, the film hints at its complexity through its enigmatic form and striking imagery.

Although I struggled my way through the first half, I found the overall experience to be curiously intoxicating, leading to a cathartic culmination in the concluding moments.

Oh come on... What the hell?! Rubbish from top to bottom. Unbelievable that Magimel got a Cesar for that. It says a lot of the current situation of the French movie industry...

[Filmin] First film of 2023. Albert Serra comments that he wanted Benoît Magimel to be like Jack Nicholson in "Chinatown" (Roman Polanski, 1974), with a constant presence, grabbing the screen to offer his vision of the world. And it is true that the story has something of a thriller, although the director's tendency to not explain too much hurts it, especially since we are facing almost three hours of film, so slow that they are hypnotic, like the chill out sequence. Magimel is splendid, representing that post-colonialism that refuses to acknowledge its failure, with a friendly and at the same time almost psychotic smile, seeing his network of favors and connections endangered. An "Apocalypse Now" with touristic sunsets.

Like a rain forest: it's thick with ambiance and there's a lot to see but not much to look at.

This moody film about the French high commissioner of Tahiti doesn't really dwell on story as much as it does this deep vibe. Imagine Terrence Malick trying to get a tan on an exotic beach during a cloudy day and you'll get a good picture of what this nearly 3-hour returned postcard has in store.

Props to Benoît Magimel for carrying this heavy piece, and to Pahoa Mahagafanau for being so talented and gorgeous.
