A French politician roams through bizarre joints in Tahiti while realizing he has no power over anything, filling the existential void with haughty monologues and paranoia about possible nuclear experiments going on.

In the three hours of the film, nothing at all happens: the audience is just asked to bask in the island’s hazy atmosphere and absorb the ambiguity and lack of understanding of the characters. Everything plays out in a loose and minimal, yet uncannily artificial manner. Rather than relying on a traditional plot, the film hints at its complexity through its enigmatic form and striking imagery.

Although I struggled my way through the first half, I found the overall experience to be curiously intoxicating, leading to a cathartic culmination in the concluding moments.
