A deeply disturbing and uncomfortable watch. Lucas Hedges gives a deeply rooted, present performance. Nicole Kidman's role is the pivot of this piece, and, unsurprisingly, she completely embodies the compassion and love needed. Russell Crowe does well with what he is given, but this is where I think the film fails - it never sees the father's crisis of faith and oversimplifies a very complex internal battle by characterizing faith as judgemental, manipulative and ultimately hateful, so it gave Crowe very little to work with (I think this was the unresolved issue of the author - he never really sees his father, and so that story is never told or the crisis resolved). Personally, I'm still waiting for a film that faithfully brings both real crises to the screens. I give this film a 7 (good) out of 10, but the whole story remains untold. [Drama]

I think the film intentionally doesn't cover the father's crisis of faith, because, well I don't see how this is a surprise, but the movie isn't about the parents.

Intensely powerful; this is yet another statement on how some people in the Christian faith fail to understand homosexuality. As a Christian myself, and as somebody who has struggled with his own sexuality, this film resonated with me, especially in relation to the misplaced judgements that some people in the church have imposed upon me. A very good film and one that should be seen, regardless of your faith or sexuality - its message of tolerance is a universal one.

Boy Erased was amazing. Incredibly tragic story. It felt like a remake of Full Metal Jacket at times, were it not a true story. Great cast. You know who deserves the nod for best supporting actor? Flea. Incredible asshole presence. Good luck not crying. 9/10

Lucas Hedges really is one of the most talented young actors working today. Really gives a great performance here. Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are really good too. This can be very uncomfortable at times and the moral is kinda obvious at this point but still important.

I think lucas headges is a great actor and seems to be landing a lot of deep roles that he does well with, especially with this role and I thought the film was sound, emotional, deep and times got me worked up because of the therapy program that was so wrong. It kept me plugged in from start to finish.

If you want to understand a young gay man trying to navigate the self loathing to the realization of who he is, this is the movie to watch.

It's compelling and compassionate and from the view of a man in that position, where his family is on the far opposite of supportive.

Note there are plenty of movies that tell how "tough" it is on families when a family member is gay, but there are very few that stay on focus of the real story that people need to learn, understand and find their compassion for how the LGBTQ community feels as they have to come to their realization. This story stayed focused on their side of the story and I'd force every homophobe to watch it off I could.

I cried so many times and I'm still crying writing this. For everyone reading this,it might be a movie hard to watch. But for me,it's a series of memories i don't even want to remember. It was horrific and tensing.Im living in southern most part of India and I've studied in a missionary school. When I was at 11th grade,i experienced every struggles this movie shows and I still can't even believe that I escaped it and living peacefully isolated. The one thing I hate most in the world is the God and belivers

@comrade_mode Don't hate God - He loves you, and despite the judgement of some believers, He wouldn't condemn you. I say this as a gay Christian.

If Cameron Post and Beautiful Boy had a baby, it would be this film. I think they called it 'Boy Erased' because that's what will happen to it in your memory.

Still, it didn't make the same mistakes as _The Miseducation of Cameron Post_ and Nicole Kidman continues to shine in everything she does. Not to mention the fact it was amusing to watch arguably the 3 best Aussie actors working today all play Americans in the same movie.

Focusing on religious conversion therapy, which incredibly is still legally practised in the USA today, this film is an emotional and disturbing journey focusing on the true story of a young man’s troubled journey through his teenage years. Although we are now more intelligent and socially aware than our predecessors, It shows how religious beliefs from the distant past are still practised but should have no place in todays society. So many wrongs still happen in the present time, all because religion gives it a reason to exist.

I wish there were more mothers out there like Nancy who chose their child instead of their religious beliefs. I'm glad my mother did too.I wish there were more mothers out there like Nancy who put their kids first place instead of their religions believes.

Beautifully acted but hard to stomach. I did not even know that there is such a kind of therapy. This is disgusting.
