Just like that Romeo + Juliet with Dicaprio and Claire Danes was Shakespearean dialogue set in the late 20th century, this weird little movie is film noir, set in the early 21st.

A strong, dense film noir with sharp fast dialogue that almost necessitates a viewing with subtitles. A decent story that falls a little short due to its long winded, winding, double-triple crossing narrative that, without subsequent viewings, would be hard for most to fully appreciate in one go. Different, but not entirely for the better.

Heard that this movie was supposed to be good and I turned it off about half an hour into it... I just can't understand the movie at all.. I found myself in no way engaging with the story or a desire to follow the charachter. Felt like the moive was written by a high school student, trying to make a smart film noir movie. Transposing classic noir onto a high school setting doesn't work... The film trying to be a smart witty noir film.

_Brick_: High school noir.

This early Rian Johnson film is flawed (jarring edits, uneven performances and unwarranted close-ups) but what he brings to the film (well-crafted story, genre mixing and superb use of music) will stay with the viewer far longer than any technical missteps.

An interesting mix of noir and high school movie. It's well shot but the story wasn't compelling enough and it was a little long.

I think I understand what they were going for with the film noir - it just didn't work for me on any level.  I spent half the movie wondering if it was really a spoof as it was so distracting to see high schoolers having dialog and confidence that they would not normally have (think Chinatown set in high school).  Mix in a ton of overly-dramatic backing music and I fell asleep two thirds of the way through this long-winded movie.

A remarkable hybrid of two genres Brick is a movie that will either be loved or hated. The movie works for me because of the confidence Joseph Gordon Levitt and director Rian Johnson bring to the material. This could've been a dumpster fire but it is actually a very underrated teen detective noir movie.

I appreciate the effort but it fell flat. The idea of kids acting like they're in a film noir just gets tired. Ends up looking like a college film project.
