One of the best romantic movies of 2015, very engaging and highly underrated.

I read some criticism about that there's not a whole lot going on in the movie. If you look for your classic romance, look elsewhere. For me, this is not a romantic movie, it's about going somewhere new because you want more than your old well-known life could give you, and sticking with it through the sudden temptations of the well-known.

And it captures this sudden allure of the life you know well, the people you know well, the places you know well, that makes you forget why you left in the first place perfectly. It also drives home the moment where you suddenly remember, why you left. Sure, the actual plot details around that might feel a bit constructed (do all Irish people around the world know each other?), but it doesn't matter, really.

Part of what makes the movie great also is the character development, beautifully put on display by Saoirse Ronan, who really needs to win one of the big awards at some point.

And I'm also really sorry about the bucket.

This movie is a journey. If you don't enjoy it, you weren't ready to be on it. Wonderful and engaging from start to finish.

Such a heartwarming film. Tony and Eilis were a lovely couple to watch develop over time and I loved Saorise's acting. Glad I watched this!

Well, that was disappointing. I expected to love this movie but was instead left furious by the end of it. I'm surprised not more people are pointing out how incredibly unlikeable Eilis is in the final third.
I wouldn't have minded a good old love triangle but this was just poorly executed. The way Eilis treats Tony the second she left was totally uncalled for, her motivations unclear. What suddenly makes her remember that OPS she has a husband back in the US is a wannabe blackmailer old lady? Okay. While the final scene is really beautiful, well shot, touching, it just leaves me unsatisified; thinking Tony deserves better.
. This could have been an 8/10, if it wasn't for Eilis' character flaws. I really enjoyed the general theme of the movie and the decision she made in the end. 6.5/10.

@interstellaries are we going to pretend that Tony basically forced Eilis into marrying him, simply because he was afraid of losing her? I’m not excusing Eilis attitude, but both characters are easily flawed.

Deeply moving, the film has themes that may resonate with anybody who has left home to new surroundings. Its hard to let go of both places, for a while. The lead character in the film made the right choice at the end, much to my relief. Not everybody will agree, it may depend on your own life experience and the choices, for good or bad, that you made.

A nice enough movie, but it felt like it was missing a pay-off.
If anything, the moral as laid out in this movie seems to be "get out of small towns and move to new cities; there's too much gossip back home".
