This is a film that is primarily about the dynamics of a family over many years. It starts out as a bit of a black comedy before it shifts into full-blown drama during the second half of the movie. I think what was most surprising is that not only does it move away from being a comedy but it actually begins to feel like a bit of an epic (it kind of reminded me of Once Upon a Time in America). The main character (and the movie itself) dances around the complexities of homosexuality and how the a family deals with the topic. I believe what I most admire about the film is that no character is heroic or evil. One of the advantages of being told over many years is that the evolution of characters can be put on full display. I really enjoyed the film - it is a shame that is is so hard to find.
