“If you had to choose between me and your mother, who would it be?” Capitu asks provocatively of her problematic lover. Elsewhere, they dance to inaudible music with their friends, each couple keeping to a rhythm of their own. At times, this depiction of the memories we see one Dom Casmurro commit to paper with a flamboyant pen seems to be an interplay of conflicting emotions – particularly when jealousy raises its head. Adapted from the Brazilian classic novel 'Dom Casmurro' (1899) by Machado de Assis as an ironic/philosophical essay on poetry and jealousy, and featuring fragments of Bressane’s previous works.

I think it's my second film by this director. The first was another re-reading of Machado de Assis, the short story "A Causa Secreta" in "A Erva do Rato", with Selton Melo. There there was an author above all readings, here "Dom Casmurro" doesn't escape from Bressane's many peculiarities either. I know he produced a lot of films in other decades of our cinema, there are even several excerpts of scenes from other films of his, like "Matou a Família e foi ao Cinema". I liked that, also the text about Brazilian poets of Romanticism, plus a star by the "featurette/making of" as post-credits scenes. Vladimir Brichta, Mariana Ximenes are great, even Rogério Sganzerla's daughter is here.

[IFFR] The Brazilian director exposes his static and theatrical staging, almost Brechtian, in a reflection on absences and fragmented narration. The chapters are used as ellipsis to tell a story of adultery. But Júlio Bressane is more interested in using the original text as an excuse to expose other stories, images within the image that show Brazilian culture and artistic work.
