A very strange story, told with excruciating stillness. The performances were good. The cinematography is gorgeous. I’m left wondering what the realty of it was and am stunned by the brutality of the ending. I can’t help thinking it was feeding the KTG trope but I’m not sure why. Is it about “othering”? Or, is it a coming of age romance? Or, is it soft horror. It seems to completely leave the point of view to the predilections of the viewer. I know, now, that it was inspired by an 1872 Gothic novella, which is considered to be an early work of vampire fiction, predating DRACULA by 27 years. But, once again, I think we can only say it was “inspired” by, because that doesn’t seem to be the tone of the whole. On the basis of the visuals and the performances I give this movie a 6 (curious) out of 10. [Period Romantic Drama, Horror? Fantasy? Social Commentary?]

Anyone else notice the reflection in the water at the end of the movie?

If you enjoyed watching the equally sadistic "Interview with a Vampire", then you'll probably love/hate this one too. Both movies seduce you, and then stab you in the heart.

Stuffy, sultry, and steamy gothic tale that is an interesting watch. The ending is quite shocking.
