An exceptional masterpiece.

- Stellar performances by Bogart, Bergman, Henreld and Rains
- The writing and dialog are extremely well done
- Breathtaking scenery and lighting (remember this is the 40s so CGI is unheard of)
- Fun music and OST

I heard about all the praise the movie received but after watching it, it is now easily in my top movies of all time.

Here's looking at you, kid

A Classic Gem !

This movie is Humphrey Bogart at his best. He plays the typical cool guy like no one else ever could. Add to that a jilted romance and a backdrop of World War II and you have the makings of an unforgettable movie. There are lots of high rated classics that I found myself disappointed by, but this movie doesn't disappoint at all.

There's a reason if it is considered among the best movies, if not the best.

You might think that the story is about a lost love, but I felt it was more about a man that had lost all the passion in his life.

The script is tight, with no downtime. The plot keeps developing in a wonderful way, sucking the viewer in. Casablanca had a fast but natural progression, giving it, at least for me, a modern feel. The dialogue is well written (even though you can definitely see that it was intended to be a play) with just enough humour to keep everything moving smoothly. So many great one-liners.

Bogart plays the disillusioned Rick perfectly, Heinreid is a superb patriot and Bergman is a fantastic love interest that is not just there to look pretty. The characters, all of them, are memorable and still relevant today.

The cinematography was really well done, but the audio was amazing. A really nice score that accentuates what is happening on screen without obscuring it.

Simply put, it's a masterpiece. Watch it if you haven't already, you won't regret it.

10/10

Play it again, Sam.

Without a doubt, one of the best movies. I liked it from the first second to the last. It is one of the most important classics.

An incredible film, thoroughly entertaining, with an engaging plot, amazing characters and great on-screen chemistry betwixt actors, each giving fine performances.

Finally rewatched it after a couple of decades and obviously I am hardly coming to it fresh but I was surprised that's just how well it aged. Many films of that era now feel slow paced but there is very little wasted time. Ingrid Bergman is radiant, but arguably the star for me all things considered is Claude Rains...

Edit for sober second thoughts: it is remarkable how Claude Rains' personal charm and the knowledge he redeems himself in the end somehow manages to almost completely obscure ( for me at least and during the movie) the fact that the script paints his character as repellent - most strikingly he takes advantage of his position of life and death power to be a serial rapist.

Ingrid Bergman's passivity (and the hint of pedophilia in her relationship with Victor Lazlo) also leave a sour taste. In retrospect, a guilty pleasure...

I actually thought it was slightly overrated. Don't get me wrong. It's a well-made movie with a great screenwriting and the acting was good. But the story didn't really grab me along. I don't see where it is anything but just a good movie. I can see why it gets the praise it does. Maybe it's not really my type of film.

@maiden-aveline It's because for old people who saw Casablanca when they were young, watching it gives them nostalgia. I have wanted to watch it for a long time because of its popularity and because it is on the top 250 of IMDb and I wasn't completely disappointed, but as I expected, I didn't love it. I liked it but some parts were extremely slow and it felt as if the movie was adding a lot of unnecessary parts just to hit a predetermined 100 minute length. However, lots of other movies do this nowadays so I am kind of used to it. The main part that I love in this movie is the one where the song "As Time Goes By" plays over Rick's memories, I had already listened to the song many times on youtube, and now I finally get to see its meaning.

@lazo nonsense. Lots of young people love Casablanca. It's not the most popular movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood just because boomers like it.

This movie is slow but I love the storyline and the dialogues. I love it when he says "Out of all the gin joints in the world, she walks in mine"

Pretty much a perfect movie. The direction, the performances, the cast, the locations, the lines... All superb. Love the relationship between Bogie and Raines.

Watchable. There are so many hilarious historical inaccuracies... from people who lived through so many of those events. It's kinda ridiculous.

As for film itself. Humour works, characters are charming. Actors couldn't sell emotional weight of the story, moral dillemma is outdated and therefor the plot didn't grip me. Film is limited by the era it was created in.

p.s. thanks to Casablanca now I know that disco ball was around since 1917! That's truly blew my mind.
