In my teenage years, "Chasing Amy" was one of my favorite movies. And even though I can now see the numerous problems that are present from today's perspective, I'm still a big fan. It's certainly the case that director Kevin Smith was a bit out of his depth with the subject matter, but at the same time, I'd still say he got it right in the end. The whole last third is so satisfying that I can put up with one or two unpleasant plot elements. And the film is also so much more than what critics like to make of it. It's obviously very personal to Smith, and it definitely made me think about a few things at the time.

Overall, the film also sets itself apart from other romantic comedies in a positive way. It helps that the characters feel 100 percent real and the dialogue (except for numerous inappropriate terms) is strong. That's not to say the characters are all likable. Ben Affleck's Holden in particular is a prime example of what would be called toxic masculinity these days. His relationship with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) is also toxic but equally captivating. And the resolution is perfect, with Adams' fantastic performance taking the film to a new level. Kevin Smith has never been as good a director as he was in the latter half of the 1990s.

Pretty dumb movie. I was expecting this moving to be funny. It wasn't. This moving is very boring. Nothing exciting or interesting about it.
