It’s almost like the Russo brothers saw what people’s main critique of their Marvel films was, and thought: well fuck you, we can be stylish if we want to.
So instead of doing another Marvel film, they opted to make something that will remind you more of a Michael Bay or a bad Danny Boyle film.
Like, the directing is really annoying and excessive.
Also, I think there’s a bit of a disconnect between how dumb this character acts versus how overintelligent Holland and the Russos are trying to portray him through the (unnecessary) narration and dialogue.
A shame really, because I think the script checks a lot of boxes, and the cinematography is certainly better than any of their Marvel films.
The score isn’t half bad either.
The most positive thing I can say is this: I like that the film is at least trying something different.
It’s just a shame that the horrendous directing constantly takes you out of the story.

5/10

@jordyep Anyone that can suffer 3 minutes of a Marvel movie should not comment on directing. The directing was the best part. Such beautiful touches that most people don't notice.

@htpcmac I see. However, given some of your own ratings and comments on films/series, I wouldn’t say I’m the pleb here.

I liked the performances of Tom and Ciara but I felt they were the only characters in the movie I could remember. Really sums this movie up. Forgetful. Didn't need Tom speaking to the camera. Movie was way too long for what it is. It's a real shame because I think the potential was there for a great story.

Well made and brilliantly acted film. The story was very depressing and it‘s not a movie I would watch a second time. The ending scene was amazing though and I especially liked the soundtrack.

Tom Holland, I appreciate your efforts, but man the Russo's did you dirty with their music video directing.

Deserves more than the 67% at the time of my review. It's worth your while to watch but be aware that it's heavy. It has given me a lot more empathy for the type of life they ended up with. A tear-jerker at some points too.

I'm loving these new roles from Tom Holland and he's definitely upped his game with this strong and challenging role with a deep impact and loved the plot, It kept me hooked start to finish with plenty of entertainment even though the running time was high. A good picture from the Russo Brothers.

A movie that went straight into my heart. So sad movie, but the reality. And without saying to much. För me it really hitted hard. And what a performance he does in this movie. You are much more then just our friendly spider man. Your future as a actor has just begun. Amazing movie! And the way it touched me was something special.

Cherry is a hard movie to decipher and I get that there is sort of some epiphany at the end but all you take away from this godamn movie is don't join the army. Maybe its Holland and Russos fucking up but I gotta see if the author, Nico Walker did that shit too.

Sure, it’s overlong and it drags in places at times. However, there are many good moments within the film, anchored by another great performance from Holland. Tighter pacing would have served the film well, but this is still a cherry that is worth biting into.

Has a indie vibe the story told although not necessarily new, made you curious to find out if the main character finds himself...and in someway the ending provided that.

[Apple tv+] The Russo Brothers' first attempt to make a film about anti heroes instead of superheroes. The result is a cocktail shaker of styles that shows all the cinema they have seen (Kubrick, Scorsese, Stone ...). But they forget to find their own voice, underlined by a flimsy script that doesn't know how to build the characters. "Cherry" is a mainstream that looks like an indie film, a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Cherry is so hard to watch I even had to close my eyes in some scenes.

But Tom and Ciara's performance is flawless and definitely makes you empathize with the characters.
