Great character writing in this. Despite having never seen the TV series or read the manga this film is based on, the film does a great job of introducing you to these characters and getting to know them. You immediately feel attached to them and it makes all of the events in the movie that much more impactful.

There's also some great atmosphere here of a classic showa-era Japan that has a nostalgic air to it, despite me never experiencing such a thing personally. I can only imagine how nostalgic this setting would feel to somebody who actually lived during that era.

I will say that the film drags just a bit towards the end, and the plot is a bit aimless, but despite that, there's so many strengths here that it really bolsters the film and makes it a very enjoyable watch. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
