This reboot is not what you think. It doesn't want to repeat or retell the old story again. It doesn't want to compete with Anabelle in the doll horror genre. It doesn't take itself seriously. That's right, this movie is a comedy-horror.

Taking the charismatic spin from the old movies isn't the way I would have gone, as it is lacking in the department of character altogether. However, it uses tropes to gain laughter and scares, much like Krampus did. I was really enjoying the first half hour, loving the setup to a movie I had no idea what to expect from. But then the "evil" happens, and yeah, it falls a bit short.

The gore is on par with the latest few Chucky movies (Which I do wish they continued that storyline). While not as much as, say, Seed of Chucky, it does go places the others didn't. Giving you a more guttural feeling of seeing and maybe even laughing at something that was unexpectedly taboo. That being said, herein lies the problem with most of the plot points and general imagery. It's way too fake.

Chucky's new look isn't something I'd buy a kid. He was barely passable in the original, but here, it's way too far past uncanny. With the look of the doll itself, the second thing I noticed is how no one is weirded out more at Chucky when shit starts getting real. A common horror trope, but it isn't to its advantage here. _Also pointing out a problem in lazy writing doesn't make it any less lazy_

Yes, characters are bland, Andy is too old for Chucky and should know better when doing the stuff he did. Mark Hammil did a good job at the voice. But felt too unnerving from the very start. The friends are a major highlight and really pull together the movie's core... _somewhat_. Certain storylines are kind of left in the ditch. I know they aren't trying to retell the original, but the main revelation for Andy shouldn't be tossed in like a boss battle and leave no emotional realism towards it either. You can have it wholly or not at all.

I had fun with this reboot, it hasn't landed quite how the first did. But it gets to new territory in interesting and surprising ways. Having the main plot twisted like this didn't sit well with me at the beginning. Though after seeing it all the way through, I have to give it props for creating a new reason to be scared of toys.

So, Child's Play was a good movie.

I wouldn't exactly call it great, hell compared to the other Chucky movies I would put them above this one. I don't really like how Chucky was portrayed, is my main issue. See, in the original films, Chucky is a loud mouth, sexist, alcoholic asshole who kills for fun because he enjoys it. His one-liners rival that of Freddy Krueger, and his kills are some of the most creative in all of horror. However, in this film, they made him almost sympathetic in a way. Like, Chucky does what he does because he doesn't want anyone coming between his best friend (Andy Barclay). While, in the original films, Andy Barclay is merely a means to an end for Chucky, who's only using Andy for a vessel to transfer his soul into.

However, the reason I rate this film so high is because on its own, when not comparing it to the original Chucky films, Child's Play is a fun horror flick. Each kill is great, gory, over the top fun, and while I personally don't like how Chucky was portrayed compared to the original, his portrayal works on its own merit here. The acting really lands, and I especially like the relationship between Andy and his mom, and how this portrayal of Karen Barclay is more laid back and chill than the original. Though, in the original Child's Play, Andy is only six years old, and here he's about thirteen.

Overall 8/10

I'm usually not a fan of remakes especially these days when it seems Hollywood is out of ideas and just goes around remaking movies for the hell of it. Childs Play is the exception to this rule. First off they remove the mystical element of what Child's Play was about ... there was no convict on the run or bad man who put his soul into the doll... the doll was reprogrammed or most of its functions were left open so that it would become violent and deadly. Mark Hamill played the perfect Chucky and the boy plays the perfect Andy. Even The Supporting Cast was better than I could have expected for a remake horror movie. If you skip this you're doing yourself a disservice especially if you're a fan of the child's play series. You can't deny that this is well put together. I wish I could say different because I don't want to like remakes but even I can't deny the fact that this was just really well done

I'm not a fan of remakes but I will say and the 1988 Child's Play is great, but this updated version actually was not at all bad. Unlike The Hustle which was almost a scene-for-scene remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, just gender-swapping the main characters, this one has its own 21st century spin and honestly, it mostly worked. The dark humor and horror really blended well with director Lars Klevberg avoiding the tired jump scares.

An added bonus, Mark Hamill made for a great voice as Chucky, though certainly Brad Dourif is still the best. Also doesn't hurt to have the lovely Aubrey Plaza, but does make me feel old seeing her play a mom... **3.75/5**

I'm one of those kids who usually supports a horror remake, I know the online horror community is ready to crap on them at a moment's notice, but I am always happy to go in with an open mind, and often get a lot of enjoyment out of them. Hell, John Carpenter's original _Halloween_ is only my **fifth** favourite _Halloween_ movie. Plus, I absolutely **love** both Audrey Plaza and Mark Hamill. But this 2019 _Child's Play_ is worse than the original in basically every way. It honestly might be the worst movie in the franchise.

_Final rating:★★ - Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._
