Great creative story. I think it's mainly for kids, but this was a great movie overall.

I didn´t know this was based on a book when I choose to watch this but the story had youth-novel printed all over it with two young protagonists. Unfortunately this is only the first part of a story that produced 4 novels in total. The movie wasn´t a success though generating below 20m$ while costing 55m$ which in Hollywood closes the door for sequels.
Which is a shame I guess because of all the youth novel movie adaptations I saw this is one of the best with a story that not only relates to children. They didn´t overstress it in making it a 2.5 hour movie and the production in general is really good.
But it works as a standalone movie with an open ending that leaves you with either your imagination or you take the route of reading the books.

@finfan Huh. I really enjoyed this movie back in the day, it didn't feel incomplete or lacking an ending. I didn't even realize there was more to it until just now reading your comment. I guess I'll have to check the books :)

@ajperez81 It's been four years since I watched it so I don't remember details. But as mentioned it works in itself. I didn't knew then this was a whole series of books. Found this out afterwards, so I do understand your view. I had assumed they wanted to produce the whole series but since this weasn't a success it never happened. Never read the books so don't know where this story goes further.<br /> Just watched it because of Soarsie

Started out very promising, loved the idea of having to keep a secret for 200 years and passing it on (amazing scene by the way, as the years count down and you see the hands age while passing on the case).

But overall it never really got me very excited, I think there was more potential and as I understood from reviews, the book has much more depth to it.

Still an enjoyable movie, especially for a younger audience, I'd think.

Film 87 (Goal: 300) of 2024

A fun family friendly YA adventure film. It starts a little slow as it builds it's world but the last 20 minutes are a lot of fun. Sure, the CGI is a bit ropey in some areas but the charm of Saoirse and Harry among the other established actors helps to drive this. Unfortunately it's an overlooked film and the story isn't superb enough to drive in a new audience. I would love to see this as a television series, in the vain of the recent Percy Jackson series.

I hope I wasn’t the only one wondering why they didn’t just light torches.

Why wouldn’t they throw more than one rock down at the end?

In the book, they don't have matches. They don't even know what matches are. However, they tried to use oil and lit it from the stove, but the Unknown Regions were so vast that their fire didn't always last.

Felt like a lot of familiar ideas. It was more fun than I thought it would be. Good family movie.

Not really the same as the book. I first read the book and saw the movie. I don't like this movie version. The meaning of true story is lost in this movie. The book isn't just a teenage story ... :-( I'm not happy ... and that's the real reason why the other books haven't been filmed and this movie has fallen... :-( But I really like the book series!!!

Greatly crafted setting, reminds me of Bioshock, has that steampunk vibe. Movie is really slow,
you basically watch 90 minutes for 3 kids to get to the surface of a post apocalyptic earth
. The two main characters are somewhat likeable but generic, I really enjoyed the addition of Bill Murray as the corrupt mayor of the city.
