Well that film broke me internally. Damn you manipulative string music!!!

I made noises I didn't know I could make. Seriously though it's a must watch. The Directing here by Lukas Dhont is absolutely formidable, he has got an absolute worldy performance from young Eden Dambrine.

A very close friendship between two thirteen-year old boys Leo and Remi gets tested to the limit. It's almost unreviewable due to spoiler risks.

Cry tally : 6

I thought the character died too early. With 45 minutes left of the movie, it started to drag at parts.
Anyway, amazing performances (even the school children looked like real students instead of the typical child actors you see in Hollywood high school movies) and cinematography.

Interesting story, not necessarily too original but quite well acted.

Very well acted by the young protagonist. The film could have been a little shorter in my opinion. A few ice hockey fragments less would have been fine. Still a very good movie though.

Wow Astonishing! Left me in tears.
Can’t describe all the emotions “Close” brought to me in 90 mins. Started sweet, ended bitter. Leo & Remi had a really great friendship, so sad how some words at school could turn that upside down leading to a true tragedy, that they didn’t even have a chance to explore their feelings towards one another. I wish I could see Leo & Remi more. Eden and Gustav did a great job with the characters. No need to mention the marvellous cinematography!

There are two perspectives in this film, which work almost in a confrontational way. The first is a subtle reflection on how heteronormative perception can cloud the innocence of a relationship that is not at the moment of deciding if it's something more than mutual admiration, a generous love that is reified when faced with external gazes. The second is a manipulation of pain that is recreated almost in a cruel way, seeking to twist emotion in a predictable and dishonest way. The first part is a great movie, the second is, to say the least, disrespectful.

I've been waiting a long time for this movie and now I finally got to watch it. I chose the original version, because in my opinion the German dubbing of Rémi is absolutely incongruous. My school French is a bit rusty, but what are subtitles for?
And what can I say in conclusion? What a masterpiece! So simple.
Not to shed a tear here is pretty much impossible.

Like pictures that are worth thousands of words...

Close is a sublimely subtle film exploring the beautiful agony and the frightening intimacy of special friendships. Rather than dialog heavy diatribes and saccharine speeches, the film unfolds before us like a bitter flower blooming.

The 30-second courtyard fight alone is some of the most emotionally filmmaking I've seen this year.

I won't go into the story, because putting words on it breaks the spell that the images cast. I will say, however, that Lukas Dohnt's approach to the film reminded me of Dolan's Mommy -- not thematically, of course, but in it's capacity to get straight to the heart of the matter with the blade of discretion.

Yeah… maybe
don’t kill your main character halfway in???
I understand
it’s supposed to deal with grief and responsibility, but the exploration of those undertones, especially guilt were marginal at best, and it ended up being people crying and silence for the next hour. Also it’s kinda hard to entertain the suspension of disbelief, kids won’t kill themselves because of a fight like this, it’s grossly exaggerated and theatrical.
The cinematography, the score and the chemistry between the main characters was good at least, too bad it wasn’t enough to carry the rest of the movie.

@serialwatcher05
Remi did not commit suicide because of (only) the fight. It is clearly hinted at that Remi already had serious psychological problems. This is e.g. from his problems with sleeping, speaking about his thoughts going wild. His friend was the only person in his world helping him holding it together. Without him, he could not take it any longer
i feel like i cant put to words how this made movie me feel, i havent cried like this in months.
We witness all the stages of grief Leo went through after losing his friend, the denial, the anger, and the acceptance that in some way he was ultimately responsable for it, i just cant imagine going through something like this at that age, it would have destroyed me.
