Makeing a Lovecraftian inspired movie is though, only some of the best filmakers in history have managed to pull it off, one of the most succesful clearly being John Carpenter.
It's from Carpenter that Richard Stanley draws most of his inspiration, both in pacing and directing, while still maintaning his very specific style that put him on the map in the 90ies with "Hardware". Couple this with the always bizarre, and charismatic, Nicolas Cage and you have a power duo that commands attention. In this they succeded fully, helped by a stunning photography and very talented - and young! - ensemble cast. Evrey part of this movie manages to recreate that feeling of utter cosmic dread that is the center of Lovecraft's fiction and that's so difficult to put to film.

If you are a Nicolas Cage fan you won't be disappointed. Having him and Director Richard Stanley work together on a Lovecraft Story is definitely a must see. I mean come on, Nicolas Cage milking an alpaca! This film will easily qualify to be one of those top Horror Cult Classic down the road.

Pretty bland Stephen King'ish short story with no real surprises.
I couldn't really concentrate on the movie because the only thing i could think of is that i have seen this before made with much better execution.
Pretty good acting but the actors unfortunately didn't get much to work with.

Verdict: Pretty much a waste of time, not because its bad but because it's as bland as diluted water. Didn't make me feel or think.

Considering I didn't love Mandy and many Lovecraft inspired films end up a mess, I kept my expectations in check for Color Out of Space. I'm not sure if that contributed to how much I enjoyed this, but any way you look at it, this is a wonderfully entertaining horror flick with some fun monster effects, unsettling performances, and a consistently menacing vibe. To top it off, the soundtrack reinforces the mood and is a huge contributor to off kilter tone. Moody horror fans should absolutely adore this.

Don't come to this expecting a flawless retelling of HP Lovecraft's iconic tale. Remember that the horror in that tale has the same name as the tale itself, and expect that instead. Forgive them for reusing names instead of just rolling from scratch, and don't expect the story to follow the same progression even when it seems to get on track. Further complicated is the transition from Lovecraft's historic Arkham region to a contemporary setting not unlike the Arkham region, like someone read "Arkham Now" out of Chaosium and thought "oh, well, we'll just use that" without understanding why things are the way they are in that setting.

This retelling doesn't follow the Lovecraft story beat for beat, but it does take many beats from it. Purists will balk. People who can take a deep breath, a step back, and appreciate how well the descriptions are captured on film will find a lot to appreciate here. Nicholas Cage doesn't ruin the performance - he's just sort of in it, and in key moments being Cage actually helps due to his acting methodology.

This was our Halloween movie for 2020. Grey, Dove, Abel. Cheers.

Nick Cage going a caricature of Nicolas Cage, with a cast of supporting actors making sure they tick off EVERY Sci Fi /Horror meme and stereotype including, constantly repeating that "everything will be fine" when the world is clearly going to hell in a hand basket, creepy kid staring off at and talking to "friends" than no one else can see, creepy repressed yet hormonal teenage girl, into witchcraft and spells, Tommy Chong doing Tommy Chong out in the woods, Joely Richards who it appears never attended a culinary school, Poltergeist TV screens, cell phones connecting to other worlds, and some OK, 80's era, John Carpenteresque critter mutations, and lighting SFX. Oh yeah, and a black but not TOO black narrator / hero who, in a woke twist, ISN'T one of the first to meet an untimely end, and is the sole local survivor of this bizarre interlude....

Not "horrible", but nothing you haven't seen before, prolly done much better.

I have never read Lovecraft's short story on which this film is based but I would like to, especially after seeing this film. It's visually stylish, suitably horrific, and very well done. Oh, and it's great to see Nicolas Cage in a recent film that isn't bottom of the barrel awful. Highly recommended, especially if you're a fan of the color purple (the color not the novel).

Really good telling of Colour out of Space. The director makes good decisions regarding what to show and what not to as the sense of dread is built upon with dream-like visuals that almost contrast the affect that the strange cosmic phenomenon is causing.
Decent special effects and the cast is great, Nick Cage is himself as usual and steals the show a bit, but the supporting cast really make it work.

All in all, throughout the whole movie, all I could think of is why Nicolas Cage is imitating Trump when he's going crazy.
I'm not pro him at all but it really just ruins the whole atmosphere and from the first moment it happened that was all I could think of, and it just ruined the rest of the movie for me. It added nothing absolutely nothing and just ruined the movie.
