Nice movie. Feels very melancholic due to it's story and throughout the first half Makoto behaves like a kid that needs some good ol' smacking. I felt really, really sorry for the mother throughout.
Although, the end was kinda obvious for me, I had the hinch it would come to this and felt it'd be the best way to end this movie like that. At some points it felt very shallow and partly awkward (the mother who's crying at the dinner table and no one doing anything for example, confused me). I also wish the relationship between Hiroka and Makoto had been solved differently as it was, that was one of the rather shallow moments in the movie. There was room for sooo much more.
But it was quite the opposite with Saotome, my fav character in this movie, and the chicken leg/meat bun "exchange" as well as the "revelation" at the dinner table where Makoto says in tears how Saotome was/is the first friend he ever made and that he wants to go to the same school as him. Very touching moment.
The animation isn't the best even for 2010's standard but the story is much more important to begin with and how a suicide attempt of a family member affects the whole family.

I enjoyed it a lot. To appreaciate the goodness of the movie you have to watch it entirely, I guess. At first I was thinking Makoto's character development is completely missing and this movie will end in a bad way but sometime after the half this changed.
