This is the first movie (from many) that I've seen where the human kind (good guys) actually lose.

Stunned and intrigued if this is also the fact in other older movies.

@oreioss It is indeed the case that our Grandparents and Parents made movies that were far more brave, and willing to leave an audience scared and shocked. It was also easier to scare and shock as the production standards were more primative, and the audience understood -
instead relying more on their imaginations. Today's special effects are so sophisticated, it makes it very hard to stretch your own imagination's wings sometimes. Older films require you to flex your own brain's muscles more.

Also, today's audiences simply favor their comfort zones. Escapism and saccharine endings over anything that makes them confront an uncomfortable truth.

Have you not seen Soylent Green? Logans Run? I watched those as a kid, and I tell you... Confronting those cautionary (and depressing) endings full in the face helped to make me intellectually inquisitive and what I hope is morally courageous. It really spoils the lesson when a cliche hero wins in the end, or love is reunited. You often walk away remembering less important things, or forgetting completely.

A computer scientist and his staff develop a super computer that's assigned the task of the defense of the U.S. Once online, the computer gets a little help from a super computer developed by the U.S.S.R., and the problems begin.

Things get interesting in a hurry as the computers decide that man is best not left to his own devices. This movie's got a neat trick up its sleeve in that it doesn't really develop any of the characters before it launches into the story of the computer Colossus. But, as we experience the battle between man and machine, we become fond of many of the characters.

Doctor Forbin is very smug and aloof in the beginning but as he struggles to regain control of the situation, he becomes more and more likeable, even heroic. He and Dr. Cleo Markham become more than associates under the watchful eye of the peeping tom Colossus. The build-up to their romance is involving. To add to the success of this movie, it comes complete with an awesome ending.

This movie has aged so well, especially after the release of the LLMs. This also predates Terminator.
As the main character says, "Just like your mother said, all scientist should read Frankenstein!"
I think all computer scientist and proompt engineers should check this movie out!

I'm rather surprised it took me this long to come across this, as I've never heard a soul talk about this move, but I thought it was a gripping tale, that got a lot more relatable after the release of LLMs. This movie should be held up a bit higher, maybe talked about in the computer, AI forums a bit more.

EDIT: I gave it a 10 because it predates The Matrix and Terminator, and the movie aged really, really well.

@gamerdave69 They tried, with Will Smith as Forbin. It went into development hell.

Although slow sometimes when compare to modern movies, it's completely gripping and I was glued. Really good sci-fi in a genre we've seen before. Good themes for you to think about along the way. Never preachy nor a forced morality tale. Great acting. The ending was abrupt but perfect. Who is right and who is wrong, man or machine?
As soon as I seen the Russians enter the movie I thought 'here we go again'. But it wasn't about the evil Russians this time. Refreshing. It's much more serious than that. I was expecting some cliché about robots not being human, and the robot being effected by that. No. Not really a cliché movie at all. It's could be simply described as about human rule, dominance, reasoning and consequence. By a robot. Humans just get caught up in all of it. Pawns on a board in the robots game.
