If I were a conspiracy theorist, I might mention there's a recent scourge of French films portraying old, ultra rich white people as unfortunate victims to try and elicit sympathy from us poors for their plight.

Case in point, The Colors of Fire is a film about poor rich people, especially those unfortunate enough to have women in charge of their fortunes because everyone knows how bad they are at business. /s

The film is based on a book by the same name and the story of revenge in which we're meant to hope the rich can be rich again isn't as clever as it thinks it is. What the writer thinks is a complicated web of intrigue is nothing more than a snap-together kit of cliches.

Which is too bad, actually, because the cast is amazing (Léa Drucker and Alice Isaaz understood the assignment and Benoît Poelvoorde turns in a strong dramatic performance) and Clovis Cornillac may have bitten off more than he can chew with this ambitious production but, except for a lack of editing (there is no way this simplistic story deserves over 2 hours of screen time), he delivers a good looking product.

Let's hope next time he gets a script that lives up to his aspirations.
