Well, this was certainly an interesting addition to the series. I enjoyed this film, certainly more than _Cube 2: Hypercube_ but I think there are several key issues that prevent me from falling in love. That being said, I was definitely entertained and recommend watching this movie, especially if you've made it this far.

This film is considered to be a prequel, and therefore the events are implied to have come before the first film, _Cube_. In a way, this provides a substantial amount of meaning to the other two films. If you were to watch all three, much less the second, you would have a great understanding of the world and the concept behind the cubes. Unfortunately, there would naught be left to the imagination, which would be fine if this were the end. (It certainly seems that way! D:)
This film focuses WAY less on the original concept of a team of players trying to survive and exit the cube. This is fine, considering this is the last film in the series (as of this date). It instead discusses who runs the cube, their processes, and the strifes they go through. In a way, they too appear to be trapped in the cube, just at a higher level.
Let's talk about Kazan, from the first film.
They did a good job of maintaining continuity by implying that Wynn is Kazan, or is somehow connected. Perhaps they're not the same person, but the resemblance is striking and perhaps we can infer that Kazan knew way too much and was forced into a disability.
I believe this film and the first film are the highlights of the series and would have made a great 2 part movie. The second film was alright, but didn't add much value. The problem is, now, that there isn't much room to grow anymore, now that all of what was uncertain in previous films has been revealed.

@otamajakushi I agree mostly but "forced into a disability" I don't like that one. You probably intended, but it just has a weird ring to it. At least to me, with acquired disability.

Cube Zero completes the trilogy of Cube movies which are based upon people waking up inside of giant multiroom cubes filled with death traps and having no knowledge of how they got there or how to get out. In this film, the viewer finally sees what goes on behind the scenes (save for a snippet at the end of Hypercube), though since this is the first film chronologically, it does not necessarily follow that this is how things worked in the other two films. However, you will finally learn a little about the likely backstory of Kazan from Cube 1.

If you are looking for a film with a feel good ending then you've chosen the wrong trilogy. The ending of this one is a mixed bag. Who the bad guys and good guys are is a matter of opinion and you may change your view from the other two films. I personally feel this film was the weakest in the trilogy since there is a lot of focus on what goes on outside the cube and less focus on character development inside the cube. It is still well worth watching. If you have not watched the other two Cube films, I do recommend watching them first and saving this one for last so the background revealed here doesn't spoil their viewing.
