I'm a fan of Clio Barnard's 'The Selfish Giant', it was a very tender look at Northern English working class culture. This is another attempt and makes a good companion piece to 'The Levelling' and 'God's own Country', as agriculture plays such a huge role in the films. 'Dark River' though, doesn't quite match up to those two films, mainly because it's a bit twee throughout, has some less than convincing performancs and also has a weak third act. At some points it feels like a made for TV drama. The ending just doesn't resonate unfortunately, as it's more melodramatic than the rest of the film's tone - which is a shame as the rest of the film is more than adequate. 6.5/10

This story is told primarily in the silences. It’s a movie that showcases great performances and a crippling tragedy. If you are looking for masterclass in acting, this is for you. If you are looking for a movie that moves at pace, this movie is not for you. I enjoyed the performances. I give this film a 7.9 (great performances but probably wouldn’t watch it again) out of 10. Depressingly heavy and beautifully bleak at the same time. Landscapes I would love to get lost in and thick accents that were hard to understand at times but I believe the acting and the way the story is told through **Clio Barnard**'s eye are enough to understand what's going on. One rating point extra for **Ruth Wilson** - I just love her.

A story that highlights the extent of the mess a single abusive parent can leave behind, but also a glimpse of hope and recovery by confronting the trauma 7/10. Well acted by the two leads. This is a slow-burner, but very atmospheric and beautiful cinematography.
