I went into Darkman knowing nothing about the film. My familiarity with Sam Raimi's filmography only pertained to Evil Dead and Spider-Man. I assumed Darkman is existing IP. It surprised and delighted me to learn it was an original creation from Sam Raimi and the other writers.

I recognize the effects were very cheesy. Today, all comic book movies feel the same. I appreciated Sam Raimi's direction with Darkman. It made the movie feel like I watched a graphic novel.

The story is a little bizarre. With a character named Darkman and all the time spent on the skin regeneration, it was weird how few scenes happen at night. Despite that, the infiltration from Darkman to Durant's gang added a neat mental element I've not seen before. It's an interesting concept and it executed well.

I love Sam Raimi and really enjoy Liam Neeson, but for whatever reason I did not see this movie until now. I had no idea what it was about going in, and I am not sure if that made me like it more or less. I enjoyed it, but in modern culture that is saturated with superhero content, this one is lost in the grander scheme of things.

Rating: 3/5 - 75% - Worth Watching

Grateful because I can only assume this is the primary reason for the Raimi/spider-man green light. And I can see why! This is frankly iconic throughout.

Why the fuck didn't Liam Neeson do any other performances like this though? This is by far the best I've seen him on screen and he pulls off the wild overacting one-liner Campbell/Cage-channeling performance so well.

Would love to see a Trainspotting type sequel where time has passed and everyone is older. I just want this sweet Raimi/Neeson collab back.

Not the most original movie with 2024 eyes but it is entertaining as hell.

This should've been Batman's true origin story.

Raimi's direction and Neeson's acting are a perfect combo when it came to making this movie.

Personally, I think this role should've been for Bruce Campbell yet, Universal wouldn't allow San Raimi to have such creative freedom to do so.

9/10

You can see the Raimi's Spider-Man in this movie. Even though it falls short to become a "good" movie, I liked watching it. Also, the story is like a rip-off of The Fly.

"I'm everyone - and no one. Everywhere - nowhere. Call me... Darkman."

Liam Neeson is fantastic as Peyton Westlake. Love the way he moves around and how he's so determined to get that pink elephant for his girlfriend. Sam Raimi's style also perfecty fits this film. Love the idea too. Taking on appearances of your enemies to confuse them and even murder each other. The story is simple though, Peyton is out for revenge to get the people that destroyed his lab and lab partner. For me the film also really has a classic kinda Universal Monster sense to it. Can't describe it. Might be the look of Darkman?

Anyway glad I finally decided to watch this one. Been long due and it was a lovely watch.
