An atmospheric film, with great cinematography and direction, but was a bit unaffecting due to the bland characters.

Suburban portraits of lonely people united by refusal, who sometimes chase each other, sometimes bump into each other, and sometimes merely pass by one another. With his second feature, Wong Kar-Wai already found all the right coordinates and trademarks of what would reach full form in his later masterpieces, including Chris’ languid camerawork, white tank tops, and Latin-American songs. Then why the low score? I don’t know, but I felt a little disconnected from the characters, especially toward the end when there were some inconsistencies with the tone. You could probably skip this unless you are a huge fan.

[Filmin, 4K] Dreams and memories in lonely interiors. "You will see me in your dreams," Yuddy says to Su Li. Or maybe she is part of a dream. Memory and the passing of time, a minute that passes and that is already part of the memories. Latin sweat in a love story without love. There is a sense of doom at all times, a life that goes on out of necessity, like that of the legless bird that must keep flying. Like the tragic ending of Leslie Cheung. It is not a poem yet, but Wong Kar Wai begins to write beautiful verses.

Nowhere near as good as WKW’s later movies but still good.

Nice characters (especially the women) and cinematography.

This movie was a bit of a mixed bag. I think the setup is good - a man has no regard for the women in his life and he ends up treating them badly. The worse he treats them the more they seem to want him. I think the film works best with this storyline as it is interesting to see the women at different stages of recovery. The rest of the movie is just so-so - I suspect that there is something lost in the translation as I think there is a more beautiful film in here that I could not access.
